Galvanizing of metal trusses

What Metal Trusses Are and Where They Are Used

Purpose and Structural Features

Metal trusses are rigid spatial structures consisting of a system of interconnected elements (angles, pipes, channels, or profiled beams). They are used to create large-span coverings, roof frames, canopies, bridges, hangars, and other structures where high load-bearing capacity is required with minimal weight. Structurally, trusses can be:

  • straight (triangular, trapezoidal, parallel chords);
  • arched (for sports arenas, hangars, shopping centers);
  • spatial (volumetric trusses for especially complex solutions);
  • custom (developed according to individual designs for specific loads).

The main advantage of such structures is their ability to withstand significant loads while maintaining relatively low weight. At the same time, the main challenge is protection against corrosion, especially if the truss is operated outdoors or in aggressive environments.

Why Corrosion Protection Is Needed

Trusses usually have complex geometry and a large area of exposed metal surface. At welding points, joints, holes, and connections, “weak spots” are formed, which are the first to corrode under the influence of moisture, temperature fluctuations, condensation, and dust. If the structure is not protected, within a few years it will lose its strength, deform, or require expensive repairs. That is why corrosion protection of trusses is essential. Especially for buildings of strategic, industrial, or public importance. The most reliable method of such protection is hot-dip galvanizing. It creates a multilayer barrier coating that isolates the metal from external factors, even under harsh operating conditions. If you need not only galvanizing but also the manufacturing of metal trusses, we recommend contacting our subsidiary “UKRAINIAN STEEL PRODUCTS FACTORY“. The company provides a full production cycle: from simple parts to complex metal structures. And we, at the First Ukrainian Galvanizing Plant, guarantee reliable protection of these products thanks to professional galvanizing.

Which Trusses Can Be Galvanized

Beam, Arched, Spatial Trusses

The First Ukrainian Galvanizing Plant has the technological capability to process different types of trusses — from simple flat ones to large spatial metal structures:

  • beam trusses — used in industrial and civil construction, have clear geometry and are easy to install;
  • arched trusses — often used in the agricultural sector (for hangars, grain storage, greenhouses), require precise galvanizing along the radius;
  • spatial trusses — large volumetric frames for covering sports arenas, stations, exhibition centers, which have complex configurations and require uniform protection across all surfaces.

Trusses Made of Pipes, Channels, Angles

In most cases, trusses are made of thin-walled or thick-walled steel elements: pipes with round or profiled sections, channels, angles. We process:

  • tubular sections — the most difficult to treat, as they require precise control of drainage and ventilation holes for zinc;
  • welded angle structures — a popular option for warehouses, hangars, shelters;
  • trusses made of channels and profiles — have a large coverage area and require proper surface preparation.

Regardless of the type of element, we guarantee uniform zinc coating without drips, gaps, or internal “traps.” Our approach is technological precision combined with extensive practical experience working with different types of trusses.

Why Hot-Dip Galvanizing Is the Best Solution

Advantages Over Painting and Cold Method

Hot-dip galvanizing has a number of advantages that make it the most effective way to protect metal trusses from corrosion:

  1. Complete coverage — even in hard-to-reach areas of the structure where paint or spraying cannot penetrate;
  2. Strong adhesion to metal — thanks to chemical interaction at temperatures above 440°C;
  3. Resistance to damage — the coating does not crack, peel, and retains its protective properties even with scratches;
  4. Service life — 30–60 years without additional maintenance, depending on operating conditions;
  5. Long-term cost savings — no need for regular painting, repairs, or replacement of elements.

Unlike cold galvanizing or painting, hot-dip immersion ensures a complete barrier even at joints, welds, and holes — exactly where rust most often begins. This is especially important for complex trusses with numerous connections.

Protection of All Structural Elements

During hot-dip galvanizing, the truss is completely immersed in a bath of molten zinc. This means that not only the outer surfaces are treated, but also:

  • the internal cavities of pipes;
  • weld seams between parts;
  • ends, cuts, holes, and grooves;
  • all areas where moisture or condensation could potentially accumulate.

This ensures complete sealing and corrosion resistance for decades. No other protection method can provide the same level of penetrating treatment.

Galvanizing of Trusses at the First Ukrainian Galvanizing Plant

Equipment and Capabilities of the Plant

Our galvanizing facility is equipped with a modern German automated line that allows processing large and complex structures. We can accept metal trusses with maximum dimensions of 6500×1500×2500 mm (L×W×H). If even one of your part’s parameters exceeds these figures, please contact us by phone or message to clarify the possibility of processing. During processing, we strictly follow the standards EN ISO 1461:2022 and ISO 9001:2015 — this means that you receive not just “galvanized metal,” but certified coating in accordance with international standards. All stages (from pre-cleaning to final inspection) take place at our production facility in Stryi, where a team of experienced specialists works. We provide full technical support as well as assistance at every stage of cooperation.

Specifics of Processing Complex Structures

Metal trusses often have complex configurations with numerous joints, intersections, pipes, and stiffeners. To ensure high-quality galvanizing, we:

  • control the presence of technological holes for zinc drainage and ventilation;
  • perform shot blasting before immersion to improve adhesion;
  • carry out individual inspection of complex nodes after galvanizing.

Our experience allows us to properly process both standard trusses for hangars or warehouses, as well as unique projects with complex geometry designed for special facilities.

Technological Process of Galvanizing Metal Trusses

Preparation Stages (Shot Blasting)

The first step is thorough cleaning of the structure’s surface. For this we use shot blasting, during which special abrasive under pressure removes:

  • rust, scale, residues of oils and dirt;
  • traces of old coatings (if any);
  • any foreign layers that would prevent adhesion.

The result is a clean, matte, rough surface that bonds perfectly with zinc. This is critically important to ensure uniform, durable coating without peeling.

Immersion in Zinc, Cooling, Inspection

After cleaning, trusses undergo activation (fluxing), followed by immersion in molten zinc. In our bath, a stable temperature above 440°C is maintained, ensuring quality coating across all areas of the product. After being lifted from the bath, the trusses are cooled and then undergo quality control:

  • measurement of coating thickness;
  • inspection for defects, drips, or “blind zones”;
  • documented confirmation of galvanizing parameters.

We provide technical passports and control results to each client. This way you receive not only a protected truss but also a guarantee of quality and compliance.

Coating Thickness According to ISO 1461

Standards for Different Types of Steel

The EN ISO 1461:2022 standard clearly regulates the minimum thickness of zinc coating for steel products, depending on the thickness of the metal itself:

Thickness of steel element Minimum local thickness (µm) Minimum average thickness (µm)
Less than 1.5 mm 35 45
From 1.5 to 3 mm 45 55
From 3 to 6 mm 55 70
Over 6 mm 70 85

These figures guarantee durability of protection even in aggressive environments (industrial areas, marine climate, zones with high humidity or temperature fluctuations).

How We Check Coating Quality

Each batch of trusses that undergoes hot-dip galvanizing at our plant is subject to mandatory quality control:

  • measurement of coating thickness with professional instruments;
  • visual inspection of the coating integrity;
  • detection of defects — drips, bare spots, geometry distortion, etc.;
  • compilation of a report with parameter records.

If necessary, we provide the client with official confirmation of compliance, indicating parameters and recommendations for operation. This is convenient for both government projects and tender documentation.

What You Need to Know Before Sending Trusses for Galvanizing

Preparation Rules

To avoid delays and extra costs, it is important to prepare trusses for galvanizing in accordance with technical requirements:

  1. Structures must be free of paint, sealants, adhesives, or other coatings;
  2. No foreign elements are allowed — rubber gaskets, plastic, insulation;
  3. Weld seams must be cleaned of flux, slag, scale;
  4. All hollow elements — pipes, profiles — must contain ventilation holes for zinc drainage and access.

If you are unsure about compliance, send drawings or photos in advance. Our specialists will help assess the readiness of the structures and, if necessary, provide recommendations for improvement.
